When life throws opportunities at us...

4:50:00 AM

When I graduated last year, I had my life planned right ahead of me. I wanted to pursue Fashion Journalism/Fashion Communication. I'd interned for HT City and even got into University of Creative  Arts, UK. But then I realised I didn't want to narrow down my options to just fashion. So, I decided to go with just journalism and then may be a diploma in Fashion Journalism.

But when the rest of my class applied for their masters degree, I didn't. My university exams were postponed and it clashed with most of the entrance exams and I have never been good at multi-tasking. So, I didn't apply. I decided I would work/intern for a year and then go for my masters. It didn't seem like a very bad idea then.

So, I graduated and four months later, I was still sitting at home with nothing to do. No job. No internship. I was where I never wanted to see myself. Even the 'I don't care about my future' girls of my class were doing something. It killed me to wake up every morning and have nothing to do. I stopped talking to my college friends, dreading they'd ask me what I'm up to these days.

And then finally in October, I had a job interview with Times of India. I'd only been to another interview before that, so I didn't think in my wildest dreams that I'd have to sit for an exam. You can only imagine my shock at having to sit for that exam. It wasn't good.

But it turns out it wasn't all that bad too cos I got the internship..not a job but still an internship. I was happy. And then one fine day, my boss says he is going to give me the job but then I couldn't leave the job in 2012 and believe me, I said no because that was not in my plan. I had to go for my masters in 2012 and besides, my parents would be very disappointed (they wanted me to get a masters degree first). My boss asked me to give it a thought (I'm sure he didn't want to go through the pain of training someone else). So, I spoke to my parents and everybody I could and realised I had to take my own decision. I couldn't do something just so that my parents aren't disappointed.

So, I did what I really wanted to..I took up the job.

Sometimes, things never go as planned..but that doesn't have to be a bad thing because something nicer does come your way eventually. Life throws opportunities at us but it is upon us to make use of it. It's always a two-way process..you could let it go because it wasn't in your plan or you could seize the opportunity and make the most of it. After all, life is about change and growth, isn't it?
And in the end, it is always your decision..no matter how many people you consult. It is your life..live it the way you want.

  8. You are seriously amazing. I think after graduating, that is the hardest time...trying to use that degree to find out what you're going to do next. It's terrifying. I'm glad you learned so much from that experience.
